How many men have said too much and then regretted it later – it is so much better to withhold comment until you know exactly what to say, how to say it and when to say it – sometimes it is just better not to say anything at all – Prov 11:12 reveals understanding.

Reasons to withhold comment:

Waiting to see the Lord’s direction – Gen 24:21 And the man wondering at her held his peace, to wit whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not.

Waiting for further counsel – Gen 34:5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.

The Lord has said it all already – Lev 10:3 Then Moses said unto Aaron, This is it that the LORD spake, saying, I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me, and before all the people I will be glorified. And Aaron held his peace.

No sense stirring up trouble – 1 Sam 10:27 But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his peace.

Because nothing you say is going to change a thing – Mat 26:63 But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.

Because someone else has something better to say – 1 Cor 14:30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.
