Why did Jesus stay on the cross?

Jesus didn’t come down from the cross when he was taunted by the people around him:

Because it pleased his Father – Is 53:10 says, “It pleased the Lord to bruise him” – Jesus said, “I do always that things that please him” – would you do something like this just because it pleased the Lord?

Because he had surrendered to God’s will – In Mk 14:36 he said, “Not what I will but, what thou wilt” – he wasn’t going back on what he had surrendered to do – would you be so surrendered that you would do something like this?

Because he was determined to finish his course – Right before his death, Jesus said, “It is finished” – and not only did he finish, but he finished with joy according to Heb 12:2 – Paul’s desire was to finish his course with joy, as well [Acts 20:24] – and he did finish his course [2 Tim 4:7] – would you finish your course?

Because of the repentant thief – The thieves had “cast the same in his teeth,” Lk 23:40-43, indicating that both thieves had joined the crowd in taunting Jesus to come down from the cross – yet, Jesus had to stay on the cross to be able to save the thief who later repented – would you do something like this just for somebody else?

Because of his accusers – Some of his accusers eventually got saved – they said, “Come down and we will believe” – he stayed up there and later rose from the dead and they ended up believing after all – what about Paul?  He said to Agrippa, “this thing was not done in a corner” – Paul knew about the crucifixion and might have even witnessed it, but like many others he was ignorant – he said, “had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory” – he had to endure their accusations in order to save their souls – he did this for Paul – would you do something like this for someone who hated you?

Because of his love for you – Jn 15:13 says, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” – and now we love him because he first loved us – he stayed on the cross for you – would you not, at least, receive him after all he’s done for you?

Because there was no other way – in Jn 14:6 Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father but by me” – if there had been any other way he wouldn’t have died – don’t think you can leave here and find an alternate way – there is no one in the universe who’s ever done anything close to what Jesus has done for you.

Conclusion: Christian, would you please God, would you surrender your will to God, and would you finish your course?  If you are here without Christi, would you receive the Lord Jesus?
