A Child is Born and a Son is Given
Isaiah 9:6-7
In the verse for this study we are looking at a prophesy about the Lord Jesus Christ. Since this prophesy mentions the birth of Jesus Christ it is often quoted from during the Christmas season. This verse is a great verse for looking at the deity of Jesus Christ. In this lesson we are going to look at the deity of Jesus Christ and how it is connected with the Birth of Jesus Christ.
How can we see the deity of Jesus Christ in this verse?
We see the deity of Jesus Christ in this verse by the words Born and Given. Jesus in this verse is said to be born and to be given. How can this be. The answer is simple, as a human being he was born into this world by Mary. But as the Son of God he was given because he existed with God before the world was created. (John 1:1-14 ; Colossians 1:15-17 ; Genesis 1:26)
What Doctrine does this show us has to be true?
If Jesus Christ existed with God before the foundation of the world then for him to be born, he must have been born of a virgin. The virgin birth was also prophesied in the book of Isaiah and is shown to us in clearly in what we call the Christmas passage. (Isaiah 7:14 ; Matthew 1:18-25 ; Luke 1:26-38)
Why is the Virgin Birth essential to our salvation?
In Isaiah 7:14 and Matthew 1:23 we see that it was prophesied that Jesus would be called Immanuel. This name means, God with us. The only way for God to be with us is through the virgin birth.
We get our sin nature from Adam (Romans 5:12). If Jesus had an earthly father, then he would have been born a sinner like everyone else. But by being conceived through the Holy Ghost (Luke 1:35) he was God manifest in the flesh (1 Timothy 3:16). This explains why he is said to have God’s blood in him (Acts 20:28) and why he is the perfect sacrifice for our sins (1 Peter 1:18-19).
The virgin birth then is essential to our salvation because it is the method by which God became man and took his place on the cross without it there would be no salvation.
