When Jesus Christ told the Disciples that He would be leaving, He also informed them that two others would be coming, the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost (John 14:26), and the prince of this world, which is the devil (John14:30). In this message we are going to contrast these two.

The Holy Spirit deals with truth and the devil with error

“he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. “ – John 14:26. The teacher of the Bible then is the Holy Spirit (John 16:13, 15:26). When you get saved the Holy Spirit is in you and He anoints you and teaches you all things in truth (1 John 2:26-27, Eph. 4:11). When you read your Bible or listen to a man teach the word of God, the Holy Spirit guides you in that truth.  So, if you are being taught a lie, you are able to see it. The Holy Spirit will bring “all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.“

In contrast the devil is interested in error (2 Tim. 2:17). He is very clever to feed you a spirit to give you the impression that something you’ve learned in the Bible is right and that spirit will compel you to change the Bible to fit what you now believe to be true. You do not want to come to the Bible and force it to fit your doctrine to prove that what you believe is right in every place that you read it. Instead, you want to fit your doctrine to what the Bible says and adjust yourself to the Bible rather than adjusting the Bible to fit you (Prov. 19:29). When Satan tempted Eve he focused on the positive and rejected the negative portion of God’s statement about the consequences of eating the forbidden fruit (Gen. 3:4). This is one of the clues that someone is teaching false doctrine. There is too much focus on the positive. The Bible balances counsel providing both sides of a matter (Acts 20:27, 1 John 4:6).

The Holy Spirit came to bring peace and the devil to bring worry

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”  – John 14:27.

The Holy Spirit brings peace, truth and joy (Gal. 5:22-23, Phil 4:6, Psalm 37:1-7, 2 Tim. 1:7, 1 John 4:18, Matt. 6:34, John 14:28, Rom. 14:17, John 16:8-9 , 2 Peter 1:20, 2 Cor. 4:4).

The devil brings worry, error, suffering, deceit, unbelief and misery (Luke 8:5, 8:7, 8:44, 1 Peter 5:8, Job 2:7, Luke 22:3-4)
