A Fool’s Heart Prov. 18: 2 CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO
Self-help Christianity is all about “ME.” And when your mind and heart are consumed with “ME,” you suddenly find out that you have a fool’s heart.
When your heart discovers itself it will come to this conclusion: you are wretched Rom 7:24, your heart is deceitful Jer 17:9-10, your heart is waxed gross Matt 13:15, etc – if a man finds that his heart is in such a case and he is without Christ he will drink himself drunk, dope up, enter into full time counseling, take his life, or any number of other options – if he finds this with Christ, he will have a real view of himself and start turning his attention to discovering the Lord and the Lord’s words and he will genuinely try to help other people – he won’t be stuck on himself and therefore he will be much happier.
The trouble with a fool’s heart is:
Agnosticism – Ps 14:1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. The fool tries to answer his concerns without taking God into consideration. Jer 17:10-11 I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. As the partridge sitteth on eggs, and hatcheth them not; so he that getteth riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool.
Biblical illiteracy – Prov 10:8 The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall. He knows what the authors say but he does not know what the AUTHOR says – he has no higher authority than himself.
Pride – Prov 28:25-26 He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife: but he that putteth his trust in the LORD shall be made fat. He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.
Flightiness – Eccl 10:2-3 A wise man’s heart is at his right hand; but a fool’s heart at his left. Yea also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool. Turned on by every new fad and solution – every new preacher has the answer that his heart has been looking for
The remedy for the fool’s heart:
Highly esteem the words of God – Ps 119:128 Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right; and I hate every false way.
Esteem others better than yourself (don’t worry about self-esteem) – Phil 2:3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves
