A Study of the Holy Ghost
Lesson #1 Who is the Holy Ghost?
In this series we are going to be studying the Holy Ghost. For many the Holy Ghost is a very confusing subject. This is the result of two things. First, there are many false teachings regarding the Holy Ghost which have resulting in there being a lot of misunderstanding about the Holy Ghost. The second thing is that many people never really understand who the Holy Spirit is and what is role is in the life of a saved person. During this study we will focus more on the second part than on discussing all the false teachings concerning the Holy Ghost.
In this first Lesson we will show that the Holy Ghost is the third member of the trinity. We will look at verses that show us his deity proving that he is third member of the trinity. We will also make a spiritual application as well.
The Deity of the Holy Ghost
Many say that the Holy Ghost is just an influence or spirit that God uses and not a person or the third member of the trinity (1 John 5:7). But he is more than just an influence or a spirit, he is the third member of the trinity. When we talk about the deity of the Holy Ghost, we are talking about characteristics that he had which God has also. These are things that he could only possess if he him and God were the same. Let us look at some of these things.
1) He is omnipresent (Psalm 139:7-8)
- Omnipresent means that he can be everywhere at all times. This is how he lives inside of me and any other saved person at the same time.
2) He is omnipotent (Job 26:13 ; Luke 1:35)
- Omnipotent means all powerful. The Holy Ghost definitely has power which is seen in the birth of Jesus Christ and in creation.
3) He is omniscient (1 Corinthians 2:10-11)
- Omniscient means all knowing. The Holy Ghost knows the deep things of God because he is the third member of the trinity.
4) He is eternal (Hebrews 9:14)
- This verse calls him the eternal Spirit. This is important because if he is the third member of the trinity then he was with God in the beginning. By stating he is eternal that point to the fact that there is not a time when he did not exist, therefore he was not created.
What is the Spiritual Application for us?
Since the Holy Ghost dwells in us through Salvation (John 14:16-26) and is the third member of the trinity then we should make every effort to get to know who he is and what he does. As he will have a major impact on how we live for the Lord after Salvation.
