A Study of the Holy Ghost

Lesson #2 The Work of the Holy Ghost (Part 1)

In this lesson from our study on the Holy Ghost we will be looking at the work of the Holy Ghost. The work of the Holy Ghost covers a lot of territory so in this first part we will look at the work of the Holy Ghost regarding four areas. These areas are as follows, creation, the lost, the scripture, and Jesus Christ.

In this previous lesson we saw that the Holy Ghost is the third member of the trinity. This makes him equal with God and Jesus Christ. So, it should not surprise us when we see in this lesson that he was present and involved in creation and all the way up through the Old Testament until the present day. Let us look to the word of God and see the work of the Holy Ghost in regard to the four areas listed above.

1)  Creation (Genesis 1:2 ; Psalm 33:6 ; Psalm 104:30 ; Isaiah 40:7)

  • It is not hard to see that from these verses that the Holy Ghost was a big part of creation. This is also why in Genesis when God said let us make man in our image, he was referring to the fact that both Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost were present with in and active in the creation.

2)  The Lost (John 16:7-11)

  • When it comes to dealing with lost man the Holy Ghost is said to reprove in three areas, sin, righteousness and judgment.
  • He reproves of sin because they believed not on Jesus, Righteousness because he has gone to his father. The coming of the Holy Ghost on Pentecost proves that Jesus was who he said he was, and that God accepted his sacrifice as an atonement for sin. He reproves of Judgement because the prince of this world is judged.

3)  The Scripture (2 Peter 1:20-21 ; 2 Timothy 3:16-17)

  • As the author of the word of God we must look to him to interpret the word of God by comparing scripture with scripture and keeping it in its proper context.

4)  Jesus Christ (Luke 1:35 ; Acts 10:38 ; Hebrews 9:14 ; Romans 1:4, 8:11)

  • When we look at the above verses we see that the Holy Ghost was active in the birth of Jesus, his ministry, his death and his resurrection. Every part of Jesus’ life the Holy Ghost was active in.

What is the Spiritual application for us?

If Jesus needed the Holy Ghost to be active in every part of his life, then we must also need the Holy Ghost to be active in our lives as well. This should as we said at the beginning of this study make us want to do whatever we can to become better acquainted with Holy Ghost so we can see his work in our own lives.
