All Things New, Rev 21:5

In Rev 21:5 the Lord says, “Behold, I make all things new”.  This statement is an interesting contrast to the study of Ecclesiastes, in which Solomon wrote, “there is no new thing under the sun”, Ecc 1:9.

No new thing is in direct contrast to all things new.  In Rev 21 we see a new heaven and new earth versus Gen 1:1, the first heaven and the first earth.  And we see New Jerusalem versus Jerusalem that now is.

For us who are saved, the making of all things new began when the Lord saved us.  2 Cor 5:17, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new”.

Some of the new things happened instantaneously.  Instantly, we became children of God, members of his body, saved from hell, etc.  Some of the new things happen gradually as he makes us new.  This is called renewing, 2 Cor 4:16.  And notice that this renewing is done day by day, everyday.

There is a new man but we are newborn babes at first, 1 Pet 2:2.  We all start out the same way, growing on the milk of the word.  At the rapture we will get a new body, which will be our glorified body, Phil 3:21.  We will be “all things new”.  But between then and now, we need to be growing and renewing daily.

The Lord makes in us a:

New Mind – be renewed in the spirit of your mind, Eph 4:23.  Transformed by the renewing of your mind, Rom 12:2.  With the mind of Christ, 1 Cor 2:16, we begin to think like him. The way the old man thinks is far different than the way the new man thinks.

New Heart – Ezek 36:26.  This is an Old Testament reference to what the Lord will do for Israel when Jesus returns.  However, it is an example of what the Lord is doing in us.  With a new heart, we set our affections on things above, Col 3:2.  With a new heart, we begin to love like Jesus.  The way the old man loves is vastly different than the way the new man loves.

New Spirit – Ezek 36:26.  Again, this verse exemplifies what Jesus is doing in us.  The is called the renewing of the Holy Ghost, Titus 3:5.  David prayed, “renew a right spirit within me”, Ps 51:10.  With a new spirit, we can be like Jesus, Col 3:10. The old man’s spirit is completely different than the new man’s spirit, Eph 4:22-32.

Conclusion: if you are saved and you haven’t been renewing daily, you need to cooperate with the Holy Spirit so that the Lord can make all things new in you.  If you aren’t saved, you need to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ so he can give you eternal life and make all things new in you.
