Being Tried by the Word of the Lord

(Psalm 105:19)

In this passage we are getting a review of things from the Old Testament. In this sermon we will focus on the part of the passage dealing with the life of Joseph. Notice in the passage that Joseph is said to be tried by the Word of the Lord. Let us look now at the life of Joseph and see how that he was tried by the Word of the Lord and make some spiritual applications to our life from these thoughts.

What was the Word of the Lord for Joseph?

  • That he would rule over his brethren (Genesis 37:5-7)
  • That he would rule over his whole family (Genesis 37:9-10)

What is God’s Word for us?

  • 1 Peter 2:9 (Royal Priesthood, chosen generation, holy nation, peculiar people)
  • Revelation 1:6 (Kings and priests)
  • Philippians 4:19 (Supply our need)
  • 1 Corinthians 10:13 (Make a way out that we may escape temptation)
  • Hebrews 13:5 (Never leave thee or forsake thee)
  • 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 (That he will come again)

How was Joseph Tried?

1)  Hated and Sold by his Brethren (Genesis 38:20-36)

  • Your family can sometimes be the greatest test of your faith.
  • Proverbs 17:17 (A friend loveth at all times and a brother is born for adversity)
  • Proverbs 17:25 (A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bore him)

2)  Tempted by Sin and False Charges (Genesis 39:1-20)

  • Here is where we see 1 Corinthians 10:13 come back into play.

3)  Forsaken by those he served (Genesis 40:1-23)

  • In prison Joseph served the other prisoners especially the chief baker and butler. But after interpreting their dreams. He was forsaken by the chief butler. This is a lot like ministry.
  • I wonder if while interpreting those dreams, Joseph thought in his heart what about my dreams?

What was the source of Joseph’s trial? (The Word of the Lord)

If you are going to be tried that is the best thing to be tried by (1 Peter 1:7 with Romans 10:17)

The Word of the Lord is:

  • Right (Psalm 33:4)
  • Pure (Psalm 119:140)
  • True (Psalm 119:160)
  • Not Bound (2 Timothy 2:9)
  • Purified Seven Times (Psalm 12:6-7)

Two question that we must ask ourselves:

1)  How will our trial come out?

2)  Where will we be when the Word of the Lord comes?

Note: Joseph could make the statement that he made in Genesis 50:24-25 based on the trial by the Word of the Lord that he had received and how the Word of God came.
