There are five basic categories of fruit in a Christian’s life as seen in the Bible.  You will notice that the categories overlap and that there may be more than one source for each category.

The fruit of a good tree [Matt 7:17] is fruit produced by the man that distinguishes a good man from a corrupt man.  The publicans and harlots [bad people] followed John to his baptism to prepare for the coming of Jesus and they followed the Lord.  These were good trees that produced good fruit, fruits meet for repentance [Matt 3:8; Acts 26:20]. The Pharisees, on the other hand, scoffed at John’s baptism, hated the Lord and eventually ordered his crucifixion.  These were corrupt trees which produced corrupt fruit by which they were known [Matt 7:16].

The fruit of the branches in the vine [Jn 15] is fruit produced by the Lord Jesus Christ in the life of a Christian.  This is the fruit of a life yielded to the Lord whereby Jesus is able to work through the individual accomplishing his will [Rom 12:1-2].  This fruit is impossible for a person to produce on his own [Jn 15:5].

The fruit of righteousness [Phil 1:11, Jas 3:17, Heb 12:11, 2 Cor 9:6-10] is fruit produced primarily by God the Father.  This is predominately peace, holiness, and generosity.  The sermon tonight will deal more with this fruit.

The fruit of the Spirit [Gal 5:22-23] is fruit produced by the Holy Spirit.  This fruit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance.

The fruit of the word of God [Col 1:5-6] is fruit that is produced by the word of God sown in your heart.  This fruit is salvation, spiritual growth, edification, reproduction and inheritance [1 Pet 1:23; 1 Pet 2:2; Acts 20:32; Eph 4:11-16].  We’ll expound on these five aspects in this morning’s sermon on the fruit of the word.
