Why Christians Won’t Leave Egypt Ex 14:12 CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO
Ex 14:12 says, “Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness”. This verse explains why Christians won’t leave Egypt; why they won’t separate from the world. Christians won’t leave Egypt because of their:
Appetites – Ex 16:3. “And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.” You don’t want to live by God’s words. Num 21:5, “And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.” Egypt feeds your appetites.
Habits – Lev 18:3. “After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do: and after the doings of the land of Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do: neither shall ye walk in their ordinances.” Your habits change when you put on the new man.
Treasures – Heb 11:26-27. “Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompense of the reward. By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.” Today’s Christians love money. Jesus said, “Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven,” Matt 6:20.
Idols – Ezek 20:7. “Then said I unto them, Cast ye away every man the abominations of his eyes, and defile not yourselves with the idols of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.” You love your idols more than you love the Lord.
Whoredoms – Ezek 23:3. “And they committed whoredoms in Egypt; they committed whoredoms in their youth: there were their breasts pressed, and there they bruised the teats of their virginity.” Today’s Christians hardly see anything wrong with fornication.
Uncleanness – Lev 11:45. “For I am the LORD that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.” Egypt feeds unclean minds and bodies. The Lord demands holiness.
Cowardice – Num 14:3. “And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?” Today’s Christians would rather join the world than fight them.
Conclusion: Life in the wilderness requires self-denial, separation, holiness, reproach (Heb 11:25-27) and spiritual warfare. Few of today’s Christians want anything to do with any of these things, just like the Jews back then.
