Don’t Mock Gal 6: 7-8 CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO
There are several references in the Bible to mocking, some of which we’ll discuss in this sermon. To mock someone or something is to laugh at, ridicule and insult them or it contemptuously.
Don’t mock God – Gal 6:7-8 – some men mock God by sowing to the flesh and assuming they won’t reap what they have sown. But there is a law, like the law of gravity, that you will reap what you’ve sown, whether it’s spiritual and beneficial or whether it’s carnal and harmful.
Don’t mock sin – Prov 14:9 – fools make a mock at sin. You don’t want to be a fool. Sin is like a stalker. It is looking for prey. And when you are a fool, you laugh at sin like it isn’t going to hurt you. But sin always hurts. It is a killer [Rom 6:23; Jas 1:14-15]. Sin takes you farther than you want to go, keeps you longer than you want to stay and costs you more than you want to pay. Hugh Pyle said that you always pay for cigarettes twice – when you get them and when they get you. Prov 20:1 says that wine is a mocker. It will deceive you and kill you.
Don’t mock mom and dad – Prov 30:17 – your parents may restrict you more than you want. And so you mock them to your friends. You can’t wait till you’re out of the house so you can do your own thing. You’ll be blinded to your own way according to this verse. There’s coming a day when you’ll look back and wish you had never mocked them.
Don’t mock God’s preachers – 2 Chr 36:16 – God’s preachers, the ones who preach his words, are sent by the Lord to lead you to Jesus and to help you grow in your eternal life. We preach salvation and we preach against sin. We want you to live in a right relationship with God and to know the truth of God’s words. You may not like what we have to say or how we say it, but don’t mock God’s preachers.
Don’t mock God’s people – Heb 11:35-36 – God’s people have always been the brunt of the world’s mocking. But you better remember that there is a day coming when the Lord will return and the armies in heaven will return with him [Rev 19:11-14]. You might want to check your Bible to find out who’s in this army before you go on mocking God’s people. As the saying goes, “what goes around comes around.” God’s people put up with your ridicule in hopes that you might repent and turn to God. Don’t mock our forbearance.
Don’t mock God’s Son – Matt 27:29 – there are so many people who blaspheme God by taking his name in vain. They mock Jesus Christ by using his name as an expletive and by reducing him to a fairy tale. They think they can live free from righteousness by mocking him. But the table’s going to turn. Prov 1:26 says he will mock you when your fear cometh and he will laugh at your calamity because you refused him. And you know how the old saying goes, “he who laughs last, laughs loudest.”
Conclusion: rather than mock God and his Son, you should receive him as your Savior and find out why we are willing to put up with your foolish mocking. What we have in Jesus Christ is far better than what you will ever have with the devil in this world. He and this world are coming to an end. We will live throughout eternity in the blissful glory of God’s presence forever free from sin and death and hell. Don’t mock it.
