Eternal Security John 5:24 CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO
This lesson studies the verses concerning eternal security. Some verses seem rather vague, while others are very clear. What is important to remember is that we learn from the Bible. We do not use it to merely defend what we already believe.
Our text says, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come in to condemnation; but is passed from death into life.”
A man that is saved has everlasting life, is not condemned, and is passed from death into life. — Revelation 21:8 speaks of the second death, in the lake of fire. A saved man will not face this death. There is a lot of misinformation about the subject. This is a result of an inappropriate application of the words of God, self righteousness, and bad logic. To some people, it seems unreasonable that life can be everlasting. People assume that the verse isn’t literal, but means that it is everlasting until you lose it. If you believe that you can lose your salvation, you are going to be building your defenses as to why this verse is wrong
There are verses that seem to teach that you can lose your salvation. Many of these apply to the Tribulation, for instance. Others are talking about losing rewards or losing an inheritance. The verses that we are looking at are clear. They deal with salvation and they apply today.
John 5:24 says that a saved person is the current possessor of everlasting life, that he shall not come into condemnation, and that he is already passed from death to life.
John 6:37 says if a man comes to Jesus, Jesus will in no wise cast him out. There are no possible conditions that exist for which Jesus would cast someone out!
Matthew 24:13 is often used to show that you can lose your salvation. “But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.” The end is the end of the world, not the end of a man’s life, in the context. And the doctrinal application of this verse is in the Tribulation [v.14-21].
If something doesn’t match up with what you believe, you need to calibrate your doctrine with the Bible. The most dangerous thing is to use the Bible to prove what you already believe.
John 1:12 “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:” 1 John 3:2 “Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.”
When a person receives the Lord Jesus Christ according to John 1:12, and becomes a son of God, according to 1 John 3:2, there is never any circumstance whereby you will lose your son-ship with God. If a human broke all contact with his father, changed his name, and moved to another country, he still couldn’t change the fact that he is the man’s son and his children are the grandchildren of his father. Much more, once we are God’s child, we remain his child. You may lose everything else but you can never lose your son-ship.
Galatians 4:5-7 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. 6. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. 7. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if son, then an heir of Christ.” John 10:27-28 “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28. And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. Jude 24 “Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,” No one can take you out of God’s hand and there is no way that you can fall out. You have been adopted and that’s it.
Romans 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. To be justified means that God has already judged you for your sins, past, present and future, and pronounced you “not guilty.” How can God take you back to court to try you again for the sins for which he already paid? That would be double jeopardy!!
1 Corinthians 3:11-15 describes the judgment seat of Christ. Our works take the form of tangible objects, which are passed through the fire. Works of little value are burned up, while good works are unscathed. “If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.” Thus the works may be burned up but the man is still saved!!
Romans 8:38-39 “For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39. Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
2 Timothy 2:10-13 Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him: If we suffer, we shall also reign with him; if we deny him, he will also deny us: If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.” He will deny us a reign if we don’t suffer with him [context] but he cannot deny himself [and he is in us].
1 John 5:12-13 “He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. 13. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”
2 Timothy 4:8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” Paul knew beyond the shadow of a doubt where he was going.
Conclusion: This is Bible doctrine and it is right on its own merit, not because of who believes it. You are in the hand of God the Father and there is no way to fall out. Nothing is able to separate you from his love, you are justified, and you can lose your eternal reward, but not your soul. Jesus cannot reject himself once he comes to live in you.
