Extraordinary Women in Unusual Circumstances
Proverbs 31:10-31
We read in this passage about the virtuous woman and one of the things that we take note of is the many different tasks that she is able to perform. I think this shows us that the virtuous woman can have many different forms. What is meant by this is that we cannot put God in a box and say that if woman does marry or have children then she is not a virtuous woman. I think there are many saved virtuous women who work, teach, are professionals such as doctors and nurses and they can also do the things in this passage and be a virtuous woman.
In this sermon we will look at 3 extraordinary women that are used by God in unique ways at unique times. One is a harlot, one is a young widow, and the other is a young virgin. In looking at these three women we will learn three principle that are important for all saved people not just women.
1) Rahab (Joshua 2:1-24 ; 6:22-25)
- Feared God and believed his word
- Hid the spies and saved her family
- Became an example in the honor roll of Faith (Hebrews 11:31) as well as an example of faith and works (James 2:25)
- She ends up in the lineage of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5)
2) Ruth (Ruth 1-4)
- Forsook her country, people, and the promise of marriage for God.
- To her place as a widow and a provider for Naomi.
- Ends up in the lineage of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5)
3) Esther (Esther 1-9)
- Went through a very unusual procedure for being chosen as the new Queen.
- Put her neck on the line to save her people.
- Saved herself, family, and people.
What can we learn from these women?
1) God can use anyone that fears him and believes his word (1 Corinthians 4:1-2)
2) God sees what you and I cannot (1 Samuel 16:7)
3) God rewards faithfulness (Proverbs 31:30-31)
Let us think about these women and learn from them in order for God to use us in both unique and mighty ways.
