Five Witnesses John 5:31-38 CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO
In this passage, Jesus shows five witnesses that he is the Christ, God’s Son, the Savior of the world. They are the witness of: Himself, John the Baptist, his works, his Father, and his word. The devils also bear witness, but Jesus doesn’t count them.
John 8:14 Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.
Jesus bore witness of himself (John 5:31) Deuteronomy 19:15 says “at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.” Jesus provided five. In John 10:9 he said he was the door to heaven. John 14:6 says he is the way, the truth and the life. John 15:1 says “I am the true vine” Jesus is the answer to every need you have.
John the Baptist bore witness of Jesus. (John 5:32-35) “There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.” Luke 3:2 says the word of God came unto John. He said Jesus is the Lord, the Salvation of God, and that he will baptize you with the Holy Ghost if you are saved, or with fire if you aren’t
Jesus’ works testified of him (John 5:36) The gospels are filled with Jesus’ miracles. In John 3:2 Nicodemus knew that Jesus was from God, because of the works. In John 9:32 the blind man knew he was from God. After Jesus healed a man in John 10:21 they asked “Can a devil open the eyes of the blind?” In Mark 4:39-41 Jesus calms the sea and his disciples ask “What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” The answer is in Psalm 89:8-9, where it says God rules the raging of the sea.
His Father bore witness (John 5:37) No man hath seen God at any time. When Jesus was baptized God said that Jesus was his Son, and he said it again at the Mount of Transfiguration.
John 8:42 “Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
His word testifies of him (John 5:38) If we don’t believe God, his word is not in us.
For those willing to believe, Jesus provided five testimonies proving that he is who he says.
