We have been studying each piece of the whole armor of God from Eph 6:10-18. Thus far, we have studied the helmet of salvation, which gives us a saved, spiritual, sound, servant’s mind with which to fight in our spiritual warfare. Then we studied the breastplate of righteousness, which defends us against attacks by the devil through the righteousness of Jesus Christ when we do right and stay right with God.
Tonight, we are going to look at the third piece, “having your loins girt about with truth,” [Eph 6:14]. Truth is purity from falsehood; conformity to fact or reality; exact accordance with that which is, or which has been, or shall be.
The first two times you see the word “truth” in the Bible, it is a reference to God fulfilling exactly what he said he would do. In Gen 24:27, Abraham’s servant blessed God for not leaving Abraham destitute of his “truth.” God led him to the house of Abraham’s brethren. God was true to his word. See Gen 22:15-24; Gen 24:4, 7. In Gen 32:9-10, Jacob told the Lord that he was not worthy of all his “truth.” God had been true to his word. See Gen 28:13-15.
Everything about God is true. Ex 34:6, the Lord God is abundant in truth. Jn 14:6, Jesus Christ is the truth. Jn 14:17, The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth. Jn 17:17, the word of God is truth.
Yet, there is nothing true about the devil. Jn 8:44, he “abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.” His weapon is lying. Our defense is truth. Therefore, Jas 3:14, lie not against the truth.
Like the elders who helped Moses, we must be “men of truth,” [Ex 18:21]. Ps 51:6, we must have truth in our inward parts. You get truth in your inward parts through reading and digesting the word of God and through being filled with the Holy Spirit. 3 Jn 4, we must walk in truth. Eph 4:25, we must speak the truth. Prov 16:6, we must purge sin by mercy and truth. Jn 4:24, we must worship God in truth.
Conclusion: the trouble today is Is 59:14-15, “truth is fallen in the street.” So, we must be diligent to gird our loins daily with truth.
