Prov 23:26 says, “My son, give me thine heart”. Solomon wrote this to his son, but we can apply what he wrote to us and the Lord. Look carefully at what Solomon wrote.
My son. First, you must be a son of God. And you don’t become one of these by giving your heart to Jesus. You become a son of God by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ. You trust him to save you by what he has done for you; not by what you give him or do for him.
Give me thine heart. You give it, he doesn’t take it from you. He gave his life. Is it too much to ask that we give him our heart? To him our heart is as precious a gift as we can give. When you give him your heart, anything else you have is easy to give, whether it be your money, your time, or your life.
We are to love God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength. When you truly love him, you will give him your heart. If you can’t give God your heart, you don’t really love him with all your heart.
And you give your heart to him in whatever condition it is in. You can’t clean it up sufficiently at the beginning. Consider Paul and Mary Magdalene. They couldn’t clean up the messes in their hearts. Yet, they were totally devoted to God with all their heart.
Give me thine heart. You give your heart to Jesus. You don’t give it to your church, your idols, your desires, your mate, your work, your friends, your ambitions, or whatever.
You can trust him with your heart more than you can trust yourself or anyone in this world. He will not break your heart. This doesn’t mean you won’t go through trials and heartaches. Life is like that. But when God has your heart you get through life’s trials like nobody else.
Jus as Jesus gave you eternal life that he’s not going to take back, so give him your heart and don’t take it back. It’s his to keep forever.
Give me thine heart. God already owns your body. You are bought with a price. The Holy Spirit takes up residence in there. What’s in your heart are your affections, your imaginations, your desires, your thoughts, and so forth.
When you give God your heart, that’s when you really begin to love him and his words, and you turn from sin and evil. That’s when the Holy Spirit isn’t grieved and quenched in his leadership.
When you give God your heart, you really find out what he wants you to do for him. And you begin to do it.
Solomon wrote, Let thine eyes observe my ways. When God has your heart you follow him, listen to him, respond to his reproofs, go where he wants you to go, stay away from those things he doesn’t want you to do, find the friends that are best for you, etc.
Peter found this out when Jesus asked him “Lovest thou me”? Peter assured the Lord of his love and then Jesus said, “Follow me”.
Nothing God asks is too hard because you love him so and you are loved by him so. You are privileged to serve and you will be content with him and his plans.
Conclusion: Are you his son? Have you given him your heart?
