There are three things recorded here about the Lord Jesus Christ of major significance about His life.

Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. – Jesus is God’s Lamb. God lets you know from the very beginning of the Bible that sin had to be dealt with by blood shed from a lamb.

  • The animal whose skin God used to clothe Adam and Eve is not identified, but through cross referencing scripture we can determine that it was undoubtedly a lamb (Gen. 3:21).
  • The lamb shows up again in Genesis when God accepts Abel’s offering of a lamb (Gen 4:4).
  • Abraham was told by God to take his only son Isaac and submit him as an offering on MountMoriah. On the way to the top of the mount when Isaac asks Abraham “but where is the lamb for a burnt offering” Abraham replies “My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering” (Gen. 22:7-8). King Solomon would later build the temple onMountMoriah (2 Chr. 3:1) from whichGolgotha is visible where Jesus Christ was crucified. Isaac was a picture of Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.
  • God commanded the people with Moses to sacrifice a lamb for the Passover Feast (Ex. 12:3-6, 1 Cor. 5:7).

These passages and many more we could list all show how God was preparing His people for the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world (Rev. 5:6, 13:8).

I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove – This was the sign that God had promised and it confirmed for John that Jesus was the one who would baptize with the Holy Spirit. Baptism by the Holy Spirit into the Body of Christ happens the moment that you trust Jesus Christ as your Savior (1 Cor. 12:13, Eph. 5:30-32, Col. 2:10-12). In Acts, the Holy Spirit fell on those who had not yet been baptized by water (Acts 19:2, 10:44). This indicates that salvation is not by John’s water baptism, but only by the baptism of the Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ (Acts 11:15).

And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God – Signs of prophecy were given in scripture concerning the coming of the Son of God, so John was looking for Him and recognized Him when he saw Jesus (Is. 7:14, Ps. 2:6-7, Dan. 3:25). The Pharisees refused to acknowledge Jesus as the Son of God (John 19:7), but a Roman centurion recognized who He was (Mark 15:39).
