His Name, Is 9:6-7

Is 9:6-7 … a child is born … and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.

Is 7:14… call his name Immanuel (God with us).

Matt 1:20-21 … thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

In these three passages, we find a common expression, “his name”.   The Son of God has remarkable names: Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace, Immanuel, and Jesus.  By these names, he is the answer to everything we need.

He is Wonderful.  The Psalms speak of the wonderful works that the Lord does.  And Matt 21:15 the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did.  The wonderful things we behold in creation.  The wonderful things he has done and does in our lives.

He is Counseller.   We need to be able to talk over great decisions with someone.  We need to be able to get straight, honest advice and good advice.  We get this from Jesus because there is no wisdom, nor understanding, nor counsel against the Lord,” (Prov 21:30).  When I counsel, I give them scripture and they must then apply it.

He is the Mighty God. Many gods but the people are superstitious.  Belief or practice resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown, trust in chance, and a false conception of causation.  Rooted in fear.  Ps 56:3, 11, What time I am afraid I will trust in thee.  In God have I put my trust, I will not be afraid what man can do unto me. He is the mighty God.

He is the Everlasting Father. Like the father in discipleship.  And he is always there for you.  Even better than your earthly father, he laves and cares for you, he protects you, he provides for you, he guides you, he helps you, he encourages you, he disciplines you, he feeds you and he has plans for you.

He is the Prince of Peace.  Peace with God.  Peace from the Holy Spirit.  Peace with ourselves and with others. We need the Prince of Peace, because without him there is no peace saith my God unto the wicked.

He is Immanuel.  Thank the Lord that the God we worship is with us all the time.  He is not “out there somewhere” in a place we hope to arrive if we can appease him.  He said that he will never leave us nor forsake us.  Ps 23:4 thou art with me.  He was with Joseph in Egypt and he was with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace.

He is Jesus. The world needs a Saviour.  They need to rid themselves of the shame and guilt of things they did wrong.  They need to forget the past or at least leave the past where it is – in the past.  They need the penalties for the wrongs they do to paid off by someone else.  They don’t want to go to Hell and they don’t want to be in bondage to something that controls them and makes them do something they don’t want to do anymore.  In a word they need Jesus because “Jesus … shall save his people from their sins.”

And when you get Jesus you get all of these.  You get lasting peace, you get an outstanding Father, you get the mighty God, you get eternally saved from your sins, you get excellent counsel, you get the most wonderful person you will ever know in this life and you get him now.  You don’t have to wait until after you die.  After all, his name is Immanuel, which is “God with us.”

We’ve got what we need in Jesus.  Everything the world is looking for is in our Saviour, Jesus Christ.  If we can just convince them to take him, they will find out for themselves that He is all they need.
