How to Defend Against Lust James 1: 13-16 CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO
This sermon is on how to defend against lust. When Adam and Eve were created, they had everything they needed and were content. However, the devil showed Eve that she was missing being “as gods knowing good and evil.” He showed her good things about the forbidden tree to entice her to eat it. She was “drawn away” from the commandment of God and she ate the fruit. Ever since then, we have been dominated by sin and we have to deal with lust.
Lust is in the fabric of our nature and it is in the world. We all have it and we all have to deal with it. As long as the world remains [1 Jn 2:17] we will all have to deal with it.
The way temptation works is progressive:
- Drawn away
- Enticed
- Lust Conceived
- Sin brought forth
- Death
So the best place to deal with lust is in stage 1. Here’s how to defend against lust:
Nip it in the bud – Jas 1:14 – you have to watch what you hear, what you see, what you think about and what you imagine.
Thank, glorify and love God – Rom 1:20 [27], 1 Jn 2:16-17
Learn from the mistakes of others – 1 Cor 10:6
Walk in the Spirit – Gal 5:16
Possess your vessel in sanctification – 1 The 4:4-5
Partake of the divine nature – 2 Pet 1:4 – in other words, get saved and rely upon the divine nature of the Lord Jesus Christ in you to give you the strength to defend against lust.
