Humilitiy 1 Peter 5: 5-9 CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO
1 Pet 5:5-9 – Read also Prov 15:33 and Phil 2:5-8. According to our text, humility is the greatest way for you to:
Get along with each other – v.5 – “all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility” – it is much easier for Christians to get along when they are servants to each other – Jesus said that if you want to be chief then be a servant, Matt 20:27 – as a preacher said, “If you truly know God, you will be humble and if you truly know yourself, you cannot be proud.”
Access the gift of God’s grace – v.5 – “God … giveth grace to the humble” – there is not one of us who can get along without the grace of God – Jesus said that without me you can do nothing – Paul was weakened in the flesh so that he could be strengthened by the grace of God, 2 Cor 12
Stay out of the devil’s reach – v.6-9 – “humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God” – the devil seeks to stop anyone from fulfilling the will of God in his life – he sifted Peter – he tempted Jesus – he filled Ananias’ heart – and so forth – the best way to not fall prey to the attacks of this roaring lion is to stay down – like D.L. Moody said, “Be humble or else you will stumble.”
Be exalted in due time – v.6 – “that he may exalt you in due time” – Jesus is now highly exalted but he humbled himself while in his earthly ministry – we say of Paul that he was the greatest Christian but he said of himself that he was the least of the apostles, the least of all the saints and the chief of all sinners – the Lord wants you to be exalted as his child at the judgment seat of Christ, but until then he wants you to stay down
