In the Mount of the Lord It Shall be Seen

Genesis 24:1-14

In this message we are going to look at Abraham’s willingness to offer up Isaac as a burnt offering to the Lord. It is important to note that Abraham was tempted in this manner in verse 1. Many will try and make this a contradiction with James 1:13 but Hebrews will settle the matter for us by saying that the tempted here is being tried (Hebrews 11:17).

Many times in our lives as saved people we are going to be tested and tried but there is a way to come through these and remain faithful. We will attempt to show this in this message.

Abraham and Isaac a type of the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ :

1)  Thine only son (verse 2)

• This identifies Isaac with Jesus Christ (John 3:16).

2)  Land of Moriah (verse 2)

• This is the area of the temple mount (2 Chronicles 3:1)
• Could possibly be mount Calvary but we cannot prove this for sure)

3)  Note that Abraham arrives on the third day (verse 4)

• This plainly connects to the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

4)  Go yonder and worship (verse 5)

• 1^st time the word worship occurs in the word of God, it is connected with a sacrifice.
• True worship will be connected with the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

5)  God will provide himself a lamb (verse 8)

• Plainly a reference to Jesus Christ being God manifest in the flesh (1 Timothy 3:16)

6)  Ram substituted for Isaac (verse 13)

• Jesus Christ was God’s substitution for us all (Romans 5:8)

What was seen in the mount of the Lord on this day?

1)  Abraham saw the place afar off (verse 4)

• This was the place of his testing.

2)  Abraham saw a ram caught in a thicket by his horns (verse 13)

• This was God provision for Abraham’s faithfulness.

3)  God saw that Abraham would not withhold his son from him (verse 12)

• Here Abraham passed the test.

Now what is not recorded for us in the passage is what Abraham saw by faith not with his eyes. But in Hebrews 11:19 we are told why Abraham was willing to offering up Isaac. He firmly believed that God would raise him up from the dead. Because he had received him in a figure from the dead and God had promised that a great nation would come from this son.

How can we apply this to us?

1)  Nothing is any good until it is tested (1 Corinthians 10:13)

• Our temptation is usually about something we love, note verse 2.

2)  The way for us to endure being tried and tested is to look at Jesus Christ (Hebrews 12:1-4)

• Notice both times that Abraham saw something on the mount he lifted up his eyes (verses 4,13)
• This is why we are given Colossians 3:1-4.

3)  The real victory was in looking at what he could not see (2 Corinthians 4:8-18)

• Abraham was looking for a resurrection, are we looking for the coming of the Lord from heaven today? If so it will change the way we live.

We need to focus on Jesus Christ and his return and being found faithful at that return. One of the greatest ways to overcome trials and temptations is to focus not on what we can see but on what we can’t as Abraham did.
