Jesus fulfilled God’s will because:

He knew his Father’s will – Lk 2:49 – In childhood Jesus went about to do his Father’s business.  At the temple, Jesus surprised Mary by responding to her inquiry.  He asked her, “Wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?”  It’s remarkable that Jesus knew his Father’s business before he was a teenager and then dedicated himself to that work.  Nothing distracted him from doing God’s will.

He surrendered to his Father’s will – Jn 6:38 – Jesus surrendered his own will so that he could do what his Father wanted.  Notice, again, that he knew precisely what his Father wanted him to do [Jn 6:39-40].

He sought his Father’s will – Jn 5:30 – Jesus did so by not relying on himself and by not seeking his own will.  Jesus was totally and absolutely dependent upon his Father for everything he did.  Jesus said, “I can of mine own self do nothing.”

He did his Father’s will – Jn 4:34 – Nothing was more important to Jesus than doing God’s will. Though he was tired, thirsty and hungry, God’s will was more important to him than his own rest and personal comfort.  Nothing stopped him from doing God’s business.

Because of these four things Jesus was able to go to Gethsemane and pray, “not what I will, but what thou wilt,” [Mk 14:36].  God gave him the strength to accomplish the great work of salvation on Calvary.

Conclusion: Christ left us an example that we should follow his steps [1 Pet 2:21].  Therefore, we are to do his will the same way that he did the work God wanted him to do.  Get to know God’s will, surrender your will to his, seek then to do his will and do it by God’s grace and strength.
