Matt 27:27-38 The Crucifixion CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO
This study is a little more easily taught in a verse by verse fashion rather than topically because there are so many different things going on in the passage surrounding the crucifixion. So, we will comment on each verse according to the references below.
Verses 27-28 – they stripped him and put on him a scarlet robe – what he had been wearing was called “garments, vesture” (verse 35), a “coat” (Jn 19:23) or “raiment” (Jn 19:24), but never a robe (compare Lk 20:46 to see that the scribes wore robes – although the saints have white robes in Rev 7:9) – the scarlet robe was one robe and it either had purple on it or they put a purple robe on him as well (see Mk 15:17) – nevertheless the colors of the robes are the colors of Mystery Babylon (Rev 17:4 – further tying this religious monstrosity to Rome) not the colors of the King of Kings (Matt 17:2)
Verse 28 – Stripped means that he was naked, and that’s the way he hung on the cross (verses 35-36) – but fast forward to the second advent and see that he will return stripped and naked revealing the absolute glorious purity of the glory of God (Mic 1:3, 6, 8; Is 52:10; Rev 6:16-17)
Verse 29 – crown of thorns – shows that the curse on nature from Gen 3:17-18 is paid for by the blood of Christ (Rom 8:20-23) – also on the cross the curse of the law was paid for (Gal 3:10-13)
Verse 29 – mocking the king of the Jews – they gave him a crown and reed [simulating a scepter], they bowed, and they proclaimed him King – all of these are mockeries of the 2nd Advent – Notice: the crown = many crowns Rev 19:12, the reed = the rod of iron Ps 2:9, Rev 19:15; King = Rev 19:16; and bowed = Phil 2:9-11
Verse 30 – spit and hit him with the reed = Is 50:6-9 – so there was something else going on here besides just the beating, the devil entered for one last attack to thwart the work of redemption but failed according to Col 2:14-15
Verses 31-32 Simon the Cyrenian – Cyrene was a city on the northern coast of Africa, in Libya, inhabited by, among others, Jews – references found elsewhere in the Bible are Acts 2:10, 6:9; 11:20; 13:1 – Jesus had carried his cross part of the way but could not continue for all of the things he had suffered up to this point Jn 19:17 – Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus (Mk 15:21) – this may be the Rufus of Rom 16:13 – if Simon were a total stranger, Mark would have never written about Simon’s association to Rufus and Alexander – he was obviously in Jerusalem for the Passover (Deut 16:16) –he would have been denied the passover by the Jews for being defiled – however, in his case, he had the blood applied directly to him while carrying the cross with Jesus (WOW)
Verse 33 – Golgotha – is the Hebrew transliteration and Calvary is the Latin transliteration (Lk 23:33) for the same thing “the place of a skull” – pictures of the likely spot outside of the city resemble a skull (Heb 13:12) [not the Church of the Holy Sepulcher – inside the city] – this is exactly the same spot where Abraham offered Isaac (Gen 22:2; 2 Chr 3:1) – any Jew knowledgeable of the scriptures should have been able to figure the connection
Verse 34 – vinegar with gall – Ps 69:21 – he would not drink this mixture because it was intended to inebriate him and deaden the pain of his crucifixion [Prov 31:4-7] – gall is found in Deut 32:32 connected with the vine
Verses 35-36 – parted his garments and cast lots – the rest were sitting and watching = fulfills Ps 22:17-18 look at v. 1 for the context
Verse 37 – accusation = This is Jesus of Nazareth the King of the Jews Jn 19:19 – Nazareth was not in Judea (yet he is to have been from Judah – from the house of David – in fact he was Mic 5:2) – the superscription was written in 3 languages – Hebrew for Shem; Greek for Japheth; and Latin for Ham (Gen 9:18-19)
Verse 38 – crucified with thieves = the fulfillment of prophecy Mk 15:28; Is 53:9, 12
