My Memorial unto All Generations

My Memorial unto All Generations

Exodus 3:13-16

This is a very well-known passage of scripture. It is where God tells Moses that his name is “I AM THAT I AM”. But note that in the passage that his name is said to be “a memorial unto all generations”. In this lesson we are going to define the word “memorial” and show why we should remember the name of the Lord.

Memorial – That which preserves the memory of something.

It is interesting to note that Jesus told the Pharisees in John 8:58 “before Abraham was I am”. For this they took up stones to stone him because he had just said that he was God. But the truth is Jesus Christ is God manifest in the flesh (1 Timothy 3:16). It is also interesting to note that Jesus gave himself 7 “I am” titles in the gospel of John:

1)  I am the bread of life (John 6:35)

2)  I am the light of the world (John 8:12)

3)  I am the door (John 10:15)

4)  I am the good shepherd (John 10:11)

5)  I am the resurrection and the life (John 11:25)

6)  I am the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6)

7)  I am the true vine (John 15:1)

Why should we make a memorial out of Jesus’ name?

 1)  Only name given whereby we must be saved (Acts 4:12 ; Romans 10:9-13)

  • This is the only name that can save us from our sins.

2)  The power associated with this name (John 18:1-5)

  • Note the prophesy in (Psalm 27:2) this is ultimately fulfilled in (Revelation 19:15 ; 2 Thessalonians 2:8)
  • This name has a power that no other name has ever possessed.

3)  At this name every knee will bow (Philippians 2:9-11)

  • One day everyone will remember this name.
