Noah, Gen 6:8-9

Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.  The first two times grace shows up in the Bible, it is connected with someone being delivered from wrath and destruction. Noah was delivered from the flood that destroyed the earth. Lot was delivered from the fire that destroyed Sodom & Gomorrah, Gen. 19:19.

Six outstanding characteristics are mentioned about Noah.

He was a just man.  The definition of just is acting or being in conformity with what is morally upright or good.

He was a God fearing man.  Heb 11:7, “By faith Noah being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house”.

Prov 14:26 “In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge”.  His children and their wives were spared from the flood.  The place of refuge was the ark.

He was a righteous man.  2 Pet 2:5, “…saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly”. Three sons and their three wives (6), Noah’s wife (7), and Noah, “the eighth”.

Ezek 14:14, 20 Noah, Daniel, and Job they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness… they shall deliver neither son nor daughter.  The times in Ezekiel’s day were apparently even worse than in the ungodly times of Noah.  Consider with whom this man is grouped.  These men stood in their righteousness the test of the greatest temptations.

Likewise, Lot was a just and righteous man, 2 Pet 2:7-8.

He was a perfect man. Perfect is corresponding to an ideal standard, e.g., a  perfect gentleman.  In his case, Noah was God’s ideal standard.

He walked with God.  This was only said of Noah and Enoch, who walked with God in their ungodly world.

We can walk with God if we: Deut 10:12 walk in all his ways; 1 Ki 8:61, walk in his statutes;  2 Chr 6:14 walk before him with all our heart (Before is a preposition meaning “in the presence of”);  Mic 6:8, walk humbly with God.

He was a man of faith. Heb 11:7 “by faith Noah”.  Without faith it is impossible to please God.

We must live like Noah in our day as we look for the return of Jesus.  Lk 17:27 “until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all”.  They were doing the same thing back then that people are doing today.
