In Heb 11:7, Noahs ark is a type of Christ and typifies our salvation and relationship to Christ.
Here are some of the ways Noahs ark is a type of Christ:
It was made of wood – Gen 6:14. The Lord said, “Make thee an ark of gopher wood”. Living organisms (trees) had to die to save Noah’s life. Likewise, Jesus had to die to save us, Rom 5:10.
It had a door – Gen 6:16. The Lord said, “and the door of the ark shall thou set in the side thereof”. The door was the only way into the ark and Jesus is the only way into heaven. Jesus said, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved”, Jn 10:7-9. There is no other way to be saved.
Those saved were “in” the ark – Gen 7:7. “And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood”. Their lives were saved from the flood because they were in the ark. Likewise, you must be “in Christ” to be saved, Rom 8:1.
According to Heb 11:7, Noah saved his house. This reminds us of Paul’s statement to the Philippian jailer in Acts 16:31, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shall be saved, and thy house”. More times than not, when one person gets saved, others in his family (house) will get saved, as well.
The Lord shut him in – Gen 7:16. “… and the Lord shut him in”. They didn’t leave the ark until God told them to “go forth of the ark”, Gen 8:16. Likewise, we are sealed in Christ by the Holy Spirit, Eph 1:13, 4:30.
They forsook all and condemned the world – Heb 11:7. Every worldly possession they lost in the flood. They left it all behind. Likewise, in Christ, we die to ourselves and the world, Rom 6:4-7, Mk 8:35-38, 1 Jn 2:15. This is why we lose some old friends when we trust Jesus.
They were lifted above the earth – Gen 7:17. “… the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth”. Likewise, we will be lifted up above the earth at the Rapture, 1 Thes 4:13-18.
And as an interesting side note,
The ark had three stories – Gen 6:16. “… with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it”. In 2 Cor 12:1-4 we see that there are three heavens. We will be with the Lord in the third heaven when he comes for us at the Rapture.
Conclusion: Studying types is interesting because you learn more about the thing and the person who is typified. It’s interesting to see that Noahs ark is a type of Christ.
