In Prov 18:24, a friend shows himself friendly – in other words, by the things he does, he demonstrates that he is a friend – Jesus has certainly shown himself to be friendly to us – just look at some of the ways.
He’s shown himself friendly in his:
Salvation – As our friend he saved us – Jn 15:13 says greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends – by his death, Jesus showed himself to be the greatest of friends. He showed himself to be a friend to:
- The Ungodly [Rom 5:6]
- Sinners [Rom 5:8]
- His Enemies [Rom5:10]
He’s the friend that extended us mercy when we deserved judgment [Tit 3:5]
He’s the friend that gave us a clean slate, all was forgiven [Jn1:29, Rev 5:9]
Consolation – As our friend he cares for us 1 Pet 5:6-7, and he comforts us 2 Cor 1:2-4, and lets us rest in him Matt 11:28
Protection – As our friend he is our helper who never leaves us or forsakes us Heb 13:5-6 – he protects us against temptation 1 Cor 10:13 – and against our adversary the devil Jas 4:7 – and against our enemies Rom 8:34-39
Provision – As our friend he supplies all our need Phil 4:19 – his grace is probably the biggest provision of all 2 Cor 12:7-10 – in our weakness he gives a part of himself so that we end up with supernatural strength Ps 71:16 – he is faithful to answer our prayers Jn 14:13-14
Revelation – As our friend he reveals his words to us Prov 2:6 – imagine when you are reading your Bible that the Lord is right there beside you like a parent reading to his child
