Taste And See That The Lord Is Good
We’ve often said that eternal life begins the moment you receive Jesus Christ; you don’t have to wait to die before you can enjoy your everlasting life. That’s why Jesus said in Jn 10:10, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” From the moment of your salvation you should begin to live by the faith of the Son of God [Gal 2:20]. When you first receive Jesus, you should desire the sincere milk of the word [1 Pet 2:2]. Daily, you should drink of the water of life [Jn 4:10; 37-39]. You should enjoy the bread of life [Jn 6:35]. Personally, you should “taste and see that the Lord is good.”
Who Must Taste and See For Themselves?
Young Christians
Young Christians – 2 Tim 3:15 – Timothy knew God from his childhood. God was real to him. He had personal experience with the abundance of life in Jesus. People who get sidetracked by the world often have a basic problem. They have never known the goodness of God by tasting and seeing for themselves. They must seek satisfaction and contentment in Jesus Christ. Otherwise, they will not enjoy the abundance of their eternal life. Thus, when their flesh lusts for something and they feel the pleasure, they suddenly walk away from their faith because it never amounted to much for them in the first place. Our children who strayed have no idea why we are so happy with Jesus.
Backslidden Christians
Backslidden Christians – Prov 14:14 – backslidden Christians start to feel the misery of their condition after a while, like the prodigal son did. They need to see Christians who enjoy their fellowship with Jesus, Christians who are “satisfied.” I lived as a backslidden Christian for a while. I can tell you, from both sides of this experience, that the satisfaction in fellowship with Jesus Christ incomparably exceeds the best the world has to offer [Ps 22:26; 36:8; 63:5; 103:5; 107:9]. Contrast Prov 27:20.
Lost People
Lost people – Ps 34:8 – blessed is the man that trusteth in him. You have to try this for yourself. Don’t debate. You have no idea what you are talking about. Until you have tasted and seen the goodness of the Lord you can only conjecture. When you have what we have then you will understand why we are so content with Jesus and so discontented with the world. As they say, “don’t knock till you try it.”
