Eph 1:17-19 is Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians. In this prayer we see that God gives you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him. As you know him, he gives you this spirit and enlightens the eyes of your understanding that YE MAY KNOW three things. We should know the hope of his calling, the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, and the exceeding greatness of his power to usward who believe.
The Hope – The hope of his calling. This hope is something that is common among all Christians, Eph 4:4. We are saved by hope Rom 8:24-25. This hope is the redemption of our body and the glory that we share with the Lord in eternity. You are called to be glorified and to reign with Christ, Rom 8:16-18. To reign with him, you must suffer with him, 2 Thes 1:4-12; 2 Tim 2:10-13. Ye may know the hope of his calling. The hope of his calling is what keeps you from fainting in your mind, Heb 12:2-3, and quitting before you’re done, Gal 6:9, 1 Cor 15:58.
The Riches – The true durable riches in eternity are magnificent. If you know these riches, you’ll give all you’ve got to invest in this inheritance. The more you give up now, the more you will have to inherit later.
The Power – This is the exceeding greatness of his power. This is the power that raised Christ from the dead. And it is available to us. Ye may know this exceeding power. And when you do, you will never trust the arm of flesh again. The less you depend on yourself, the more power you have available from him. Eph 3:20 he is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us. For more on this topic see Three Things Every Christian Must Know.
