The Armour of Light

Romans 13:8-14

In the word of God our spiritual armour is said to be 3 things. In the text for this sermon it is called the armour of light. In 2 Corinthians 6:7 it is called the armour of righteousness and in Ephesians 6:11 it is called the armour of God. In this sermon we will look at light and darkness through the Bible and show why we need the armour of light.

Why do we need the armour of light?

1)  Because of the Power of Darkness (Romans 13:12-14)

• To fully understand this we must look at light and darkness through the Bible .

A.  It is not just physical light and darkness.

Genesis 1:1-3 with 1:14-19 (Note what happened in creation)

Psalm 74:16 (The Light and Sun are different)

Isaiah 45:7 (I form the light and create darkness)

B.  Light is connected to God.

            Psalm 104:2 (Covereth thyself with Light)

            Isaiah 60:19 (Lord shall be unto the an everlasting light)

            1 John 1:5 (God is light)

C.  Darkness is connected with evil and Satan

            Romans 13:12-14 (works of darkness)

            Isaiah 5:20 (woe unto them that put evil for good and light for darkness)

            Matthew 4:16 (lost people are in darkness)

            Acts 26:18 (Satan connected with Power of Darkness)

2)  To reprove the Works of Darkness (2 Corinthians 6:7)

• Jesus came as the True Light (John 1:1-14 ; John 8:12 ; John 9:5)
• Light reproves darkness (John 3:17-21)
• Through salvation we are now light and not darkness (2 Corinthians 4:3-6 ; Ephesians 5:8 ; Colossians 1:12-13 ; 1 Thessalonians 5:5)
• As saved people we should reprove the works of darkness (Ephesians 5:8-17)

3)  It is our only Defense (Ephesians 6:11-18)

• Let us compare the spiritual armour with light.

            Loins girt with truth – Word is truth (John 17:17) – Word gives light (Ps119:130)

            Breast plate of righteousness – 2 Corinthians 6:14

            Gospel of peace – 2 Corinthians 4:4

            Shield of faith – Acts 26:18

            Helmet of Salvation – Psalm 27:1

            Sword of Spirit – 2 Thessalonians 2:8

Not only is it our defense against the darkness of this world but it is our defense against another great enemy, our flesh (Romans 13:12-14).
