While Jesus was born in Bethlehem and raised in Nazareth, it was the city of Capernaum that became the headquarters for His ministry (Matt. 4:13, 9:1-2, Mark 2:1-3). Jesus moved there with His family (John 2:12) except for Joseph who had likely died (John 19:26). The Bible shows us that Jesus had four brothers and some (at least two if not more) sisters (Mark 6:3, Psalm 69:8).

The fact that He had brothers and sisters shows us that the doctrine of the perpetual virginity of Mary taught by a certain church cannot be true (Psalm 138:2).

The next thing we notice is that Jesus moved the Disciples to Capernaum, as well (Matt. 8:5, 8:14). Peter brought his wife and mother-in-law from Bethsaida (Mark 1:21, 29-30, Luke 4:31,4:38).  These cross references show us that the doctrine of celibacy is another doctrine that cannot be true. (Matt. 8:14, 1 Cor. 9:5). When Jesus is in Capernaum it appears that He usually resides in the home of Simon (Matt.17:24).

Jesus Christ did several recorded miracles in Capernaum(Matt. 8:5-13, Mark 1:21-23, 2:1-3, Luke 4: 33-36, 4:39, John 6:19). However, in Mark 6:5 we are told that he could there do no mighty work.  The Charismatics use this as a proof text to support their claim that no healing can be done without a sufficient amount of faith on the part of the one coming for the healing.  Yet, the example of unbelief in Capernaum was manifested not in a lack of power on the Lord’s part to heal them when they presented themselves for healing but in the fact that there was so much dissension that the people of Capernaum would not even bring their sick out to be healed.

You can see in Mark 6:2 that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands and then in the latter half of 6:5 that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.  These verses show us that Jesus did in fact heal people in Capernaum.  Truly if a person has enough faith to come to be healed, he has enough faith to be healed.  Don’t listen to the lies of charlatans.

Capernaum went from being an exalted city because it was used by Jesus as His headquarters to being destroyed in the 1600’s by an Arab invasion (Matt. 11:23). It is non-existent today and modern archeology can only give us an approximate location. This shows us that a nation can one day be in good favor with God being used for His purposes and then end up being destroyed just like Capernaum.
