The Darkness is Past and the True Light Now Shineth
1 John 2:8
There is a phrase in this verse that we will use for our sermon thought which is “the darkness is past and the true light now shineth”. In this sermon we will use this phrase to show that we are in the night time regarding that 2nd Advent and that Jesus’ coming is likened to the Sun rising in the morning.
Examples of times in the Bible where the darkness passed:
Before looking at these examples we must note that Jesus was manifested to destroy the works of the devil and to take away our sin (1 John 3:5,8). Jesus is also the true light according to John 1:1-9.
1) Original Sin (Genesis 1:1-3)
- Satan as Lucifer was connected with light (Isaiah 14:12 ; Ezekiel 28:17)
- As a result of his fall darkness was introduced and then light had to be the first thing to show up in the recreation (Genesis 1:3 ; Psalm 74:16 ; Psalm 104:2)
2) Jesus Becoming Sin (Luke 23:44-45)
- There was darkness as a result of Jesus Christ becoming sin for us (2 Corinthians 5:21), this darkness was a supernatural darkness.
3) The 2nd Advent (Matthew 24:27-31)
- The 2nd Advent of Jesus Christ is described as the sun coming up in the morning (Matthew 24:27 ; Malachi 4:1-2 ; Isaiah 60:1-3)
For saved people the darkness has passed spiritually:
Acts 26:16-18 ; Colossians 2:12-14 ; Ephesians 5:8
What should we do regarding these things?
1) Recognize where you are regarding the day of the Lord (1 Thessalonians 5:1-9)
2) Do not be pulled in by the darkness (Ephesians 5:11-13)
3) Wake up and redeem the time (Ephesians 5:14-16)
4) Comfort one another (1 Thessalonians 5:12)
