In this passage it is important to understand the context. While the Disciples were with Jesus on earth they heard Him preach by parable and proverb many times. Some they understood while others escaped their comprehension (Matt. 15:10-16, Matt. 13:10-17). In this passage Jesus comes right out and tells them plainly that He came from God and is going back to God the Father. They finally understood clearly what He had been trying to communicate to them the whole time (John 14:2-7, 17:8, 16:30).

This is what happens to us when we read the Bible. The first time you read through it you don’t understand everything you read, but catch only parts of each book. Yet, as you pray for guidance and read it again and again the Holy Spirit opens your eyes a little more with each reading, so that the more you read the more you begin to understand. God does not expect you to understand everything contained in the Bible the first time you read it. God has packed His book with enough wisdom to keep a diligent person busy for the rest of his life. God has a way of revealing what needs to be known when it needs to be known.

Here are some other things that you can discern from this text.

Jesus came from God the Father, He went back to the Father, and He will be coming back again. Therefore, we address our prayers to the Father and ask in Jesus’ name.

Our Father loves us (John 14:21, 14:23). However, God does not love wickedness.  Without repentance a wicked man will not receive everlasting life (Prov. 6:16-19). When you won’t love God or God’s words you are inviting God’s justice and condemnation (James 1:22).

You must love God’s words enough to obey His commandments in order to reap His reward (Eph. 4:32, 1John 1:19, 2Cor. 5:10, 7:1, Phil. 4:19).

The plain truth of the Father is that He cares for you (Psalm 46:1).  He has a perfect will for your life, but you must sacrifice yourself to Him to be in it (Romans 12:2).
