The Flesh and Blood of Jesus Christ

The Flesh and Blood of Jesus Christ

Hebrews 2:9-18

In this sermon we are going to be looking at Jesus Christ as a flesh and blood man. While is it true that he was God manifest in the flesh (John 1:1,14 ; 1 Timothy 3:16), we will focus on him as a man. The purpose of this will be to learn something regarding his temptation and also to see why he is the perfect person to help us in our temptations.

What was different regarding his flesh and blood?

1)  He did not have the sin nature that we are born with due to the virgin birth (Luke 1:30-33 ; Romans 5:12).

2)  He had God’s blood not mans (Acts 20:28).

What was the same regarding his flesh and blood?

1)  He could be tempted (Matthew 4:1-11 ; Luke 4:1-13)

  • Note what James has to say regarding lust and temptation (James 1:14-15).
  • If we compare Hebrews 4:14-16 with 1 John 2:15-16 we can understand how he was tempted in all points like as we are yet without sin.
  • This is why he is said to be in the likeness of sinful flesh (Romans 8:3)

2)  He could die (Hebrews 2:9,14)

3)  As a man he faced hunger, thirst, weariness, loss, betrayal, sadness, basically any human emotion and the response connected with it he now understands (Hebrews 2:17-18).

What did his flesh and blood accomplish for us?

1)  His death and resurrection gives us victory over death (Hebrews 2:14-15 ; 1 Corinthians 15:51-57)

2)  It gives us a High Priest who understands and can succour us in all our temptations (Hebrew 2:18 ; Hebrews 4:14-16)
