Jesus said that he came that we might have life, and have it more abundantly [Jn 10:10].  I believe that many Christians miss out on the abundant life of the Lord because they don’t avail themselves of the fountain of life.  For some folks this is tragic because they turn to sin and the world for life [as in living it up], or they get caught up in life [as in that’s the way life is] or they pursue life [as in you gotta make a living].  With all their attention on living, they miss out on life.

If you look at the references in the Bible to the fountain of life, or similar expressions, you will see where the abundant life to which Jesus was referring can be found.  The fountain of life:

Is the Lord – Ps 36:7-9 – read the context beginning with v.5.  David speaks of the mercy, faithfulness, righteousness, judgments, loving kindness of the Lord.  He speaks of “trust under the shadow of thy wings,” and “thy light.” David said, in Ps 36:8, “thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures.”  David said, “For with thee is the fountain of life,” [Ps 36:9].  See Jer 2:13.  In Ps 36:8 David said that we will be “abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house.”  Well in Rev 22:1 there is a river of life that flows from the throne of God in his house.

Is Spirit-filled everlasting life – Jn 4:10-14, 7:37-39 – every moment of every day you will either be living the temporal life of the flesh or the everlasting life of the Spirit of God.  You can do all the temporal things of life filled with the Spirit of God and they will be totally different than doing these same temporal things in the flesh.  Mary and Martha.  You simply make the right choice to live everlasting life filled with the Spirit and let him guide you and supply you in the temporal things of life.  

Is the fear of the Lord – Prov 14:27 – contrast this fear of the Lord with those who don’t fear God in Ps 36:1-4, particularly young people these days.  When they don’t fear God they will pursue temporal pleasure, not sensing that there is any abundance in the life of Jesus Christ.  And this often leads to habitual or abominable sin, from which many never recover.  They miss life altogether.

Is the law of the wise – Prov 13:13-14 – the wisdom of the words of God are a fountain of life.  “The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life,” [Jn 6:63].  And the command of wise parents is a fountain of life.  Children think that they are really living when they can disobey the law of their wise parents and get away with doing what ever they want.  By the time they figure out the error of their way, they will have lived a hard life of transgression.  “The way of transgressors is hard,” [Prov 13:15].  

Is the mouth of a righteous man – Prov 10:11 – there is life sustaining abundance and pleasure in good preaching.  How rich our lives are from the living water that we have drunk from the preaching of the word of God.  And not only the preaching but also the counsel.  And also the witnessing and discipleship… the people who have been saved embark on the new life of Christ and then find abundance as they are taught his words. 

Is free – Rev 21:6, 22:17 – “the Spirit and the bride say, Come.”  The Lord gives them the water of life freely.  Invite those you know to drink.  All pleasures of the world cost something.  But those pleasures don’t hold a candle to the abundance of the life of Jesus.  And his life is absolutely free.  Invite others to have what we have in Christ.
