1 Jn 5:6-8 is quite a passage of scripture in your Bible. For the most part, Bible scholars and many preachers don’t believe that 1 Jn 5:7 should even be in your Bible. They say that this verse is a late addition to scripture, that it isn’t in the “oldest and best manuscripts,” and that it wasn’t, therefore, in the originals. Of course, they would have no way of knowing that.
1 Jn 5:7 is the single greatest verse in the Bible on the Trinity. And it has been cleverly removed from most modern Bibles. I say cleverly, because in modern Bibles, either part of verse 6 has been moved down to replace verse 7, or part of verse 8 has been moved up to replace verse 7. In this fashion, it doesn’t look like a verse has been removed from your Bible. When I show this to people, the first couple of times they compare their modern Bible with the King James Bible, they can’t even see that their Bible doesn’t contain the verse. It’s just that clever. It’s what Eph 4:14 calls, “the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive.”
But our lesson tonight is not on verse 7. Rather we are going to discuss verses 6 and 8. We have looked at these for years and have wondered to what, exactly, they pertain. Before the current “stay at home” order, Tony and I, and then Randy and I, were able to discuss, briefly, what I’m going to show you tonight. They were in agreement that we have seen something in these verses that makes more sense than anything we have found heretofore.
There is something about the way the three of these “agree in one.” When you look through the Bible and you see what’s similar about the spirit, the water, and the blood, you find some interesting things.
They are all essential for life. The spirit is essential for life [Jas 2:26]. Water is essential for life [Rev 21:6]. Blood is essential for life [Lev 17:11].
They all cleanse. The Spirit cleanses [1 Cor 6:11]. Water cleanses [Ezek 36:25]. And blood cleanses [1 Jn 1:7, 9].
They are all to drink, spiritually. When we are saved, we drink into one Spirit [1 Cor 12:13]. We drink the water that Jesus gives [Jn 4:12-14]. We drink his blood [Jn 6:53, 63]. Of course, all these are spiritual.
But there’s something else very special about the spirit, the water and the blood. And this has to do with their witness. Notice, verse 8 says, “there are three that bear witness in earth.” To what do they bear witness? In the context, they bear witness to “the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son,” [1 Jn 5:11]. They bear witness to the same record to which the Trinity bears record in heaven [1 Jn 5:7].
They are all eternal. Do you know how the spirit, and the water, and the blood “agree in one” to bear witness to the eternal life that is in Jesus? In them is also eternal life. That’s how. These three are all eternal and they are all essential to eternal life and they are all in Jesus.
The spirit that is in Jesus is the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ is the Holy Spirit incarnate [Lk 1:35]. That’s why it was blasphemy against the Holy Ghost to say that Jesus had an unclean spirit [Mk 3:29-30]. The water that was in Jesus was “living water,” [Jn 7:37-39]. In you it becomes “a well of water springing up into everlasting life,” [Jn 4:14]. And the blood that was in Jesus was God’s eternal blood [Acts 20:28; Heb 9:14].
Conclusion: This is why John recorded that “blood and water,” [Jn 19:34-35] came from Jesus’s side when he was pierced. “He that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.” In him, the blood and water were eternal.
This is why John began his verses on the “record in heaven,” [1 Jn 5:7] and the “witness in earth,” [1 Jn 5:8] with 1 Jn 5:6, “This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.” We have eternal life because eternal life is literally in Jesus Christ. This is the true record.
Isn’t it wonderful to be saved and to have this eternal life. Because “this life is in his Son,” [1 Jn 5:11], you have life. “He that hath the Son hath life,” [1 Jn 5:12]. And because of the record in heaven and because of the witness in earth, you know that you have eternal life [1 Jn 5:13]. Praise the Lord!
