The Word of a King, Ecc 8:4

In Ecc 8:4, the word of a king is authoritative and very powerful.  In the reign of Ahasuerus, when Vashti refused to come at the king’s command, she was deposed from being queen and she was replaced by Esther.  The decree was made throughout all 127 of his provinces that men must rule in their homes.  And they had to comply.  Later, Haman made a decree, with the authority of the king, that all Jews in the 127 provinces would be destroyed on the 13th day of the 12th month.  If God had not intervened, Israel would have been wiped out, on the authority and power of the king’s word.

Jesus Christ is the King of Kings.  His authority exceeds all the kings of the world.  And his word is absolute.  In Jn 7:45-46 we find that there was something exceedingly unique about the way Jesus spoke.  The reason is that he is the King.  They didn’t know that [Jn 7:40-44].  Yet what he spoke testified to the fact that “where the word of a king is there is power,” [Ecc 8:4].  The words of our King are recorded for us in the pages of this book.  It is called the Authorized Version because it is the word of God and has the authority and power of God in it.  In the word of our King there is the:

Word of life – Ecc 8:4 “word.”  In Jn 6:63-68 Jesus said, “the words that I speak, they are spirit, and they are life.”  Peter said that Jesus had the words of eternal life.  There is life in every word of this book.  In Prov 8:33-35, wisdom said, “whoso findeth me findeth life.”  You can’t have eternal life without these words.  These words are to your spiritual life what breath is to your physical life.  Men who require oxygen to breathe must have a continual supply of oxygen.  Likewise, we require a continual supply of the life giving words of God given to us by the inspiration of God [2 Tim 3:16].  We must hear their instruction daily [Prov 8:33-34].

Word of authority – Ecc 8:4 “king.” In Matt 7:28-29 Jesus spoke with authority. In Mk 1:22, Jesus taught them as one that had authority.  Indeed, he did.  His are the words of the King.  We all want authority; we just want it over everybody else.  We don’t begin to love God’s authority over us until we submit to his authority.  Once we submit, we find out that he is right every single time about every single thing.  He is the authority on salvation.  He is the authority on marriage.  He is the authority on child rearing.  He is the authority on law.  We learn from his authority that you will never be over those who are under you until you are under those who are over you.

One of the greatest things that separates God’s words from all other books in the entire world is his prophecy.  There is no other king and no other book that can do what God does when it comes to prophecy.  Through a man of God, the word of God prophesied to Jeroboam that a king named Josiah would rule over Judah and destroy his altar and images and burn the priests’ bones who had offered thereon.  That prophecy was fulfilled precisely.  The prophecies concerning the coming of Jesus Christ were all fulfilled by him against significant improbability.  No other book can match the authority of the words of God recorded in your Bible.

Word of power – Ecc 8:4 “power.”  In Lk 4:32 his word was with power.  In Lk 4:36 “with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits,” and they all came out.  In Heb 1:3, Jesus Christ upholds “all things by the word of his power.”  He spoke the universe into existence by his word.  The universe is upheld by his power.  He rebuked the devil with his words and the devil had to comply.  He has the power to bring to pass anything he says.  In Jn 11:43 he commanded Lazarus to come out of his grave after he had been dead four days by simply saying, “Lazarus, come forth.”  And, Brother, he rose from the dead.  That is power.  No one else has such power with words.

Conclusion: God’s words work in your life when you believe them, 1 Thes 2:13.  In 1 Cor 2:4-5, our faith stands in the power of God.  When you believe his words you have his life, you have his authority, and you have his power working in your life.  Conversely, when you don’t believe, you have none of these.   Put his words to the test.  Start reading his words at least thirty minutes everyday, believing all that you read, and obeying what he says.  I believe that in a month, you will already begin to see some change in your life.  Then keep this up for the rest of your life.
