When you are saved, you are joined in a couple of spiritual connections. And when you are saved and married, you have a third spiritual union. These spiritual connections must be understood and safeguarded.
You are spiritually connected to Jesus – 1 Cor 6:17, He that is joined to the Lord is one spirit. This connection makes our bodies the members of Christ [1 Cor 6:15]. Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Ghost [1 Cor 6:19]. Therefore, we must protect our bodies and our spiritual connection to Christ. According to 1 Cor 6:16-18, fornication adversely affects our spiritual union with Christ. No other sin adulterates our relationship with Christ like fornication does. Therefore, Paul said, “Flee fornication.” Furthermore, friendship with the world adulterates our relationship to Christ. That’s why James called friends of the world adulterers and adulteresses [Jas 4:4]. That’s why Paul wrote in 2 Cor 6:14-18 that we must come out from the world and remain separate.
You are spiritually connected to each other – Eph 5:30-32; 1 Cor 12:12-13, 25-26; Eph 4:3-4 – we are joined by God to others who are in Christ. We are members of his body. Therefore, we must strengthen and protect our union with each other. We do that through the preaching and teaching of sound doctrine [Eph 4:11-16]. Today, unfortunately, many people won’t endure sound doctrine [2 Tim 4:3-4] and, therefore, churches are falling apart. Furthermore, we must strengthen our union with each other through charity which is the bond of perfectness [Col 3:14].
You are spiritually connected with your spouse – Eph 5:22-25, 31; Matt 19:5-6 – Christians must marry Christians. A woman cannot submit to her husband as unto the Lord if she is not submitted to the Lord. A man cannot love his wife as Christ loved the church if he is not in love with Christ. The union formed by marriage is something that God joins together. So, marry in the Lord. And when you do, protect that union. Fornication, obviously, adulterates the relationship between a husband and his wife. So, be sure to control your eyes [Matt 5:28] and your thoughts [Job 31:1] to protect this spiritual connection.
Conclusion: Don’t let anything adulterate or weaken these connections. We must protect these spiritual relationships.
