Thy Word
Repeatedly in Ps 119, we find references to “Thy word”. These are God’s words; not man’s words. A woman at a family gathering after a funeral said, “I believe these are man’s words”.
I told her what Jesus said, “My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself”, Jn 7:16-17. These are God’s words. You know this when you do them.
Here are some examples from the Bible where God told the writer to write what he said. Ex 17:14, “write this for a memorial in a book”. Ex 20:1-31:18, “God spake all these words”. Ex 34:27, “write thou these words”. See Lev 1:1, 4:1, 6:1, 8:1, and so forth. In 1 Chr 28:19 David said that God gave him the instructions for building the temple “in writing by his hand upon me”. Jer 30:2, “write thee all the words that I have spoken unto thee in a book”. Jer 36:2, “write therein all the words that I have spoken unto thee”. 1 Cor 14:37, “the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord”. Rev 1:1-3, “who bare record of the word of God… blessed is he that readeth”. Rev 1:11, “what thou seest, write in a book”. God even said to John about the seven thunders in Rev 10:4 “write them not”.
Ps 119 refers continually to “thy word”, thy testimonies, thy statutes, etc. The Psalmist knew certainly that he had God’s words. These words we have in our King James Bible are God’s words. He wrote:
Ps 119:89 Thy word is settled in heaven. To settle is to fix or resolve conclusively; to establish or secure permanently. The words of God are not changing. “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away”, Matt 24:35. They have been translated into other languages, but they don’t need to be updated or modernized. They were established in English in the King James Biblemand they shall remain on earth this way.
For some reason, usually pride, unbelief, hatred, disobedience, or rebellion, men have a hard time with this on earth. They change the words to suit themselves. God said it, that settles it.
Ps 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet. Solomon wrote, “Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established”, Prov 4:26. Learn this word and live it. This word will speak to you and direct your steps. The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, Ps 37:23. “Order my steps in thy word”, Ps 119:133.
Be careful. There is a difference between deciding what you want to do and going to the Bible to find a verse to back it up versus deciding what to do after going to the Bible to see what God says. The Holy Spirit will guide you into all truth, Jn 16:13.
Ps 119:105 Thy word is a light unto my path. With the word I can see what others cannot see along the path. For example, survival of the fittest is like flowers in a grave yard. It’s about death with a positive spin on it. You see that from the word.
God’s words talk to you about what you’re seeing along the path. He teaches you by observation. Jesus said, Behold the fowls, consider the lilies, Matt 6:26, 28. In Ezek 8:7 God said, “behold a hole in the wall”. “Go in, and behold… I went in and saw”, Ezek 8:9-10. In Mk 13:2 Jesus asked his disciples, “seest thou these great buildings”? In Lk 7:44, Jesus turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, “Seest thou this woman”?
Ps 119:140 Thy word is very pure. It’s the purest thing on earth. Prov 30:5 Every word of God is pure. Titus 1:15, Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.
God wants us to be pure. “The end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart”, 1 Tim 1:5. He wants us to have a pure conscience, 1 Tim 3:9. 2 Sam 22:27 With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure.
When the tabernacle was built, God commanded that they use pure gold, pure olive oil, pure myrrh, and pure frankincense, and that they make a pure candlestick and a pure table.
Today we are the temple, and God wants us to be pure. You want to drink out of a pure drinking glass. You want to drink pure water in the glass. The word of God must be pure to make us pure. Clean water washes out the filth.
Ps 119:160 Thy word is true. There is absolutely no lie in the King James Bible. Every word of God id true. Jesus prayed, “Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth”, Jn 17:17. You can discern the lies and deception in men and in the world by saturating your mind with his words.
You’ll say about some things, “That’s not true”. And about others, “Ah, yes, now this is true”. When it matches up with the truth; it’s true. It’s like getting locked on key with a musical note.
Be careful not to diminish truth in your life by fiction. Movies, novels, documentaries, curricula, and conversations that are fictional will be more desirable than truth if you spend your time with them instead of the Bible.
Conclusion: the more you do what God said, the more you will believe what he wrote. Quit deciding for God; let God decide for you. Start looking at the world the way he sees it. The more pure word you get in you and follow the purer your heart and the purer your life. The more time you spend in the truth of God’s words the more you will hate lying.
