Today we are going to examine some verse about trembling in God’s presence. We will see that when God is present, people and things tremble.
The earth trembles at his presence – In Ps 114:7, when the Lord Jesus Christ returns to this earth, the earth is going to tremble at his presence. You see this truth written time and time again in scripture. See Ps 18:6-9; Jud 5:4-5; and Joel 2:10-11, as a few examples.
People tremble at his presence – In Ex 19:16-19 the people in the camp trembled at the presence of the Lord on Mt. Sinai. In Acts 7:30-32 Moses trembled at the presence of the Lord in the burning bush. In Dan 6:25-26 king Darius decreed that men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel.
A building trembled at his presence – In Acts 4:31 the place shook where they were assembled when the Holy Ghost filled all those who were praying for boldness to speak the words of God.
We should tremble at his presence – In Phil 2:12-13 we are to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling because God is working in us. Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Ghost. Corporately, we are the temple of God. God is in us, and yet, we don’t tremble at his presence. And we should tremble at his words because he speaks to us in his words [Ezra 9:4; Is 66:5]. When he spoke to Israel on the mount and when he spoke to Moses in the burning bush, they trembled at his words.
Conclusion: Will ye not tremble at his presence? – Jer 5:20-23 – you won’t tremble at his presence if you have a revolting and a rebellious heart. But you must remember that, one day, the Lord will judge you. And you will tremble then. You’d be better off to tremble now. Why don’t you trust Jesus to save you and then tremble at his presence when he does.
