The Virgin Birth of Jesus Matt. 1:20 CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO
Many preachers and teachers deny the Virgin Birth of Jesus. That’s why, when we started the church, we wrote down our statement of faith and included the fact that WE BELIEVE in the Virgin Birth. Just look at all that God was able to accomplish by this one event. By the Virgin Birth:
God begat a Son – He couldn’t have done that without a virgin. The man born would have been the child of the man with whom Mary conceived. Mary said, “How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also the holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God,” [Lk 1:34-35]. Jn 3:16 wouldn’t have been possible, because God wouldn’t have had a Son. Ps 2:7-12 makes no sense without the virgin birth. “Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee … kiss the Son, lest he be angry and ye perish from the way…” means nothing unless God has a Son. You see, Jesus was the Word in eternity. He became the Son at his birth. When people talk of Jesus as a good man, teacher, healer, prophet, what are they thinking? He’s the Son of God by the virgin birth; therefore he is God and of a superior nature to every god that man has ever imagined. He’s the only God of a divine origin.
God obtained a body – Jesus said in Jn 4:24 that “God is a Spirit.” Yet all of the promises, important to men of the Old Testament, were made to the seed of Eve, Abraham, Moses and David. The Word had to become flesh [Jn 1:14]. God needed a body to manifest himself in flesh. Heb. 10:5 says, “Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me.” And that body had to endure all the temptations we endure and had to suffer what we suffer and yet not sin one time through his whole life. God needed a perfect, sinless body to fulfill all the righteousness of the law. If not for the virgin birth, God would not have had a body; he would have simply inhabited someone else’s body. That wouldn’t do. None of them ever lived a perfect life. But Jesus did.
God was manifest – 1 Tim 3:16. In Jn 14:9, Jesus said, “He that hath seen me hath seen the Father.” Our God actually showed himself down here where men could see him and touch him and hear him speak. The gods of the world never did this. They are represented by statues that can’t do the things that Jesus did. And Jesus did the things that only God can do. They saw him and they knew that he was God. John said in 1 Jn 1:1-2, “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; (For this life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;).” In other words, we’re not talking about the figment of someone’s imagination; we’re not talking about a fairy tale. We’re talking about God manifest in the flesh.
God offered HIMSELF as the sacrifice for sin – Abraham told Isaac that this is exactly what God would do [Gen 22:8]. God offered himself in the body of Jesus without blemish and without spot [1 Pet 1:19]. He offered his body that had God’s blood flowing through its veins [Acts 20:28] as a perfect atonement for sin [Rom 5:11]. Heb 9:22 says, “without shedding of blood is no remission.” Heb 10:10,12 says, “we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all… But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God.” If it weren’t for the virgin birth, God could not have offered himself as a sacrifice for our sins. But because of the virgin birth, God was able to offer himself. There is no greater love than this [Jn 15:13]!!
God became the King – In 1 Sam. 8:5-7 Israel said to Samuel, “Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.” “And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.” Then they corrupted the line of the kings. But by the virgin birth, God was able to enter the line of David and put himself on the throne. Jesus was born THE KING OF THE JEWS [Matt 2:2]. And according to Rev. 19:16, he is coming back as the KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
CONCLUSION
If you are lost, you have just heard remarkable, irrefutable evidence that God himself came in the flesh and paid for your sins by shedding his own blood. He did that out of love for you, so that you could simply trust his payment to get you to heaven. Your payment was made by the KING.
And when you trust Jesus and the payment he made for you, you become a part of his body by the new birth just the way you were a part of Adam’s body by your natural birth. That’s how we are given eternal security. This is how we escape the death that comes to everyone out of Adam’s body (in Adam all die, but in Christ shall be made alive [1 Cor 15:22]).
***Having seen just some of the things in the Bible that hinge on the virgin birth, Christian, don’t you ever let anyone talk you out of this doctrine. Many seminary students who believed this on their way into school came out disbelieving this important doctrine. Hold firm this sound doctrine!!!****
