The Voice of the Lord Jn 12:28-30 CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO
People often talk about the Lord speaking to them and telling them this and that and the other thing. So, today let’s look at what the Bible has to say about the voice of the Lord. The voice of the Lord is:
Audible – Gen 3:8-10 – Adam and Eve could hear him calling and hid from him.
Fearful – Heb 12:19-21 – Deut 5:24-28 – when the Jews heard the voice of the Lord they were so afraid they said they never wanted to hear it again – that’s why the Lord spoke to Moses and let Moses and Aaron speak to the people.
Powerful – Ps 29:3-9 – the voice of the Lord breaks cedars, divides flames, and shakes the wilderness.
Thunderous – Job 37:4-5, 40:9 – some who have heard the voice of the Lord said it thundered Jn 12:28-30.
Trumpetlike – Rev 1:10; 4:1 – this is the sound that John heard when he heard the voice of the Lord.
Note: I believe that at the rapture we will be able to hear the voice of the Lord [probably our name being called and “come up hither”] and that it will sound like thunder and a trumpet. Unbelievers will probably hear the noise but they won’t be able to distinguish the words. See Acts 9:3-7, 22:7-10 where Paul heard Jesus’ voice and what Jesus SAID while the other men with him only heard a VOICE that undoubtedly sounded like thunder – these men could not discern what Jesus spoke to Paul.
Written – 1 Sam 15:1; 2 Pet 1:18-20 – the Lord’s voice is in his written words – the book of Deuteronomy is filled with references to the voice of the Lord being in the written words.
Conclusion: I doubt seriously most of what people say that God said to them – for one thing they never describe his voice accurately [it would scare them] and for another he has recorded all that he wants us to know in writing in a book that those who listen for his voice rarely read. The truth is they are just minded to do what they want to do and that’s pretty much it. If they were of a mind to do what the Lord wants, they would talk a lot more about what he has already said in writing!! And they would do so without changing what he said!!! And they would obey what they read!!!
