Walk in Love, Light, and Wisdom

In Ephesians 5, as Christians, we see three things to walk in.  We are to walk in love, Eph 5:2, in light, Eph 5:8, and in wisdom, Eph 5:15.  We can do this because we are saved and now have eternal life.  They were made available to us by Jesus Christ.  These things are not available to people who have not received Jesus Christ.  These are supernatural things that come from outside of our world.

Walk in Love

Eph 5:2 says, “walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us.”    This is the great sacrificial love that Jesus described in Jn 15:13.  He commanded us to love one another with his love.  In Jn 13:35, Jesus commanded, “That ye love one another; as I have loved you…”  

When you love as Christ loves us, your relationships with others will substantially improve.  You’ll be able to acknowledge that the love you have for them is greater than your personal capacity to love.  You’ll see evidence of Christ’s supernatural love.  Your marriage will even improve when you love your wife with the same love that Christ has for the church, Eph 5:25.  

Furthermore, Paul told us to walk in this love.  In other words, we don’t turn this love on  when we feel like loving someone and turn it off when we feel like withholding it.  We love this way all the time.  We walk in love.

Walk in Light

Eph 5:8 says, “now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.”  We have this light in us because we have Christ in us.  John said, “In him was life; and the life was the light of men,” Jn 1:4.  His light is unlike any other light in the universe, because the light in this universe is darkness.  

As Christians we must be careful to walk in light and not in darkness, 1 Jn 1:5-7.  The way to walk in light is to maintain constant fellowship with Jesus Christ.  When this fellowship is hindered by sin, we must confess it and get it under the blood, I Jn 1:9.  We must walk with the Lord in the light of his word, living by what he said in the Bible.  And we must speak oft with the Lord in prayer.

Walk in Wisdom

Eph 5:15-17 says, “See the that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise… understanding what the will of the Lord is.”  The Lord gives us wisdom when we ask him for it, Jas 1:5.  You’ll find his wisdom in his words, in godly counsel, and in patient continuance in well doing, as work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

In Prov 8, God’s wisdom is everywhere to guide you every step of the way.  Don’t just wait for a crisis or an emergency or a problem to seek God’s wisdom.  Walk in his wisdom daily so that you get used to his guidance in your life.  But be careful with man’s wisdom and the earthly, sensual devilish wisdom of the world.  This wisdom doesn’t line up with the Bible; God’s wisdom always does.
