Today we’re going to see a few things Jesus did through his death. What started me thinking about this subject was a conversation I had with Pastor Tim Haveman regarding a question about Moses’ death. I’m sure that he’s preaching on this subject of death today. And I’m looking forward to preaching on it, as well. Through Jesus’s death:
He abolished death – 2 Tim 1:10 – he hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. Rom 6:9 death hath no more dominion over him. Rev 1:18 he has the keys of hell and death. In the future, he will destroy death. The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death, 1 Cor 15:26. Rev 20:10 the devil will be cast into the lake of fire. Rev 20:14 death and hell will be cast into the lake of fire. Rev 21:4 there will be no more death.
He delivered us from death – 2 Cor 1:10 – Heb 2:9 he tasted death for every man. The dispute over Moses’ body in Jude 9 had to do with the devil’s power. He claimed that body through death. Notice that the souls of the saints were held in Abraham’s bosom in Lk 16. That’s why Eph 4:8-10 says that Jesus led captivity captive. In Matt 27:53 some of the bodies of those saints arose to demonstrate that Jesus had delivered them from death by his resurrection. When we get saved, 1 Jn 3:14 says “we have passed from death unto life.” See Jn 5:24. We go straight to heaven when we die and do not pass through death in the heart of the earth, according to 2 Cor 5:6-8. And then, in 1 Cor 15:50-57, our bodies will rise at the rapture.
He delivered us from the fear of death – Heb 2:15 – In Matt 10:28, Jesus told his disciples to “fear not them which kill the body.” In Acts 20:22-24; Acts 21:12-13, Paul was not afraid to die. To him death was far better than living here, Phil 1:21-24. I have been praying for the sick to get well. The thought struck me, “So, how do you want them to die?” Suddenly, I realized that how they die is not even a concern to God. And it shouldn’t be a concern to us because we have been delivered from death and from the fear of death!!
Conclusion: if you are saved you have absolutely no reason to fear death. If you aren’t saved, not only will you go through death having already been reconciled to God Rom 5:10, but you will also go into the second death in Rev 21:8. Man was created as a living soul Gen 2:7, but in the lake of fire he is a worm that dieth not in unquenchable fire Mk 9:43-44. You don’t want that. So, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved today.
