Why Do We Sing the Hymns Eph. 5 19 Col. 3 16 CLICK TITLE FOR AUDIO

According to these two passages we are to sing Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs. In this lesson we will focus specifically why we sing the Hymns and hopefully give you some reasons for why we sing the hymns instead of the modern day songs.

If we look at both of these passages we can see the purpose of these three types of songs in our lives.

1)  To help us have a Spirit filled life (Ephesians 5:18)

2)  To help us get the word of God in us (Colossians 3:16)

3)  To teach us (Colossians 3:16)

4)  To admonish us (Colossians 3:16)

5)  To affect our heart (Ephesians  5:19 ; Colossians 3:16)

6)  To cause us to give thanks (Ephesians 5:20 ; Colossians 3:16)

In Colossians 3:16 we are told to sing with grace in our hearts. One of the most well known hymns probably worldwide is amazing grace. So we are going to look at this song in our hymnal and show how it can be used to teach us some things concerning grace.

1)  Revealing Grace (1^st Verse)

• Here we see the line “ I once was blind, but now I see”
• The first thing that a lost person needs in order to be saved is to have it revealed to them that they are lost and Jesus Christ is the only way. (John 1:17 ; Titus 2:11)

2)  Saving Grace (2^nd Verse)

• Here we see the line “the hour I first believed”
• Grace teaches us to fear once it is revealed to us that we are lost and going to hell, but that same grace takes away our fear the moment that we believe.
• For saving grace see Romans 3:24 ; Ephesians 2:8-9.

3)  Sustaining Grace (3^rd Verse)

• Here we see the line “grace will lead me home”
• In living a saved life for the Lord we will need a lot of grace and it is the grace of God that is sufficient to get us through (2 Corinthians 12:9)

4)  Preserving Grace (4^th Verse)

• The last verse of the song speaks of being with God for eternity. Note how that grace is connected with eternal life in Romans 5:21.

In this Hymn we see a beautiful picture of the life of a saved person. The need revealed, salvation given, grace supplied to get through and a eternal home in heaven.
